Props to aid your at-home Yoga practice.

There have always been plenty of Yoga videos available online, but the number of people practising Yoga and exercising at home has soared during the Covid-19 pandemic. I've collated what I think are the best props to help you develop your at-home Yoga practice.

I have always been a huge fan of props when practising Yoga, and I try to encourage clients not to be afraid of using them. Your body is unique and props can be used to make your practice safer and more comfortable.

Blocks

The number 1 Yoga prop you should have at your disposal, yet the thing clients are most afraid of using in case it’s “cheating” (it's absolutely not!). I recommend purchasing two standard Yoga blocks like these from Yogamatters. Use them to help with balance, alignment, or simply to make your arms a little longer.

Cushions

You can use a cushion you have around the house, but the thicker and firmer, the better. By purchasing a meditation cushion you can ensure your body is being given the right support. I have this one from Complete Unity Yoga. By sitting on a cushion you’re lifting the hips and supporting the natural curve in the lumbar spine. It can make sitting on the floor WAY more comfortable and help to keep your spine long and chest lifted. I also use mine under my tailbone in supported Bridge and Legs Up The Wall pose (one of my absolute faves).

Bolsters

A long sausagey cushion! Bolsters are WONDERFUL if you’re practising restorative Yoga. They can be great if you have lower back pain – by placing under your knees in Savasana (or even in bed whilst you sleep).

Open your hips by coming to your knees and straddling the bolster, let your bum drop back towards your heels and rest your body down – RELAX and give the bolster a big hug!

Yogamatters have a great article on types of bolsters here.

Strap

Another non-negotiable for me. Especially if increasing flexibility is important to you. It’s possible to use a dressing gown cord, but a strap will ensure sufficient support and the right tension - especially if you’re balancing! Grab an organic cotton strap from Ecotex Yoga.

Eye Pillow

Even if you’re not into Yoga – get yourself an eye pillow. Usually filled with lavender, it’s such a lovely way to relax. This one from Holistic Silk was gifted to me a couple of years ago. Covering your eyes can help shut the world out – useful for restorative Yoga or in Savasana, or you can use it to simply help you sleep. Lavender can lower the heart rate and help to relieve anxiety. If covering your eyes causes any kind of anxiety, try placing the pillow on your forehead or chin instead (you’ll still get the benefits of the yummy lavender).

Let me know if you're purchasing any of these props - and bring them along to one of my classes! Book online here.
